The Conservative Party leader in the United Kingdom, Kemi Badenoch, has said she is not a PR for the country.
Badenoch’s latest comment followed comments about her by Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, a few days ago for allegedly denigrating Nigeria, her country of origin.
VP Shettima had on Monday while speaking at an event in Abuja, accused Badenoch of denigrating Nigeria, suggesting she could “remove the Kemi from her name” if she was not proud of her Nigerian heritage.
‘Kemi’ is a Yoruba name commonly found in the South-West Nigeria.
“She is entitled to her own opinions. She has even every right to remove the Kemi from her name, but that does not underscore the fact that the greatest black nation on earth is the nation called Nigeria,” Shettima said, drawing applause from the audience.
In response to VP Shettima’s comments, Badenoch insisted on standing by her words, saying she had no intention of softening her statements
“I tell the truth. I tell it like it is. I am not going to couch my words. I am the leader of the opposition, and I am very proud of my leadership of the opposition in this country. I am not the PR for Nigeria'' she told reporters on Wednesday, December 11.

Instead of VP & Tinubu to focus on positively, dey're sending trolls to Kemi for her statements, Kemi is not wrong abt her statements on Nigeria
ReplyDeleteExactly which comments was she right about that is particularly endemic to nigeria and not to be found in other countries? What kind of message is she sending out to black children worldwide both in the present and for future generations? Have you ever seen other politicians here in the uk from an ethnic background openly chastise their country of origin? Rishi, Sadiq, Suella, David, Diane, Priti, Dawn, e.t.c all also originate from developing nations with similar if not the same type of issues as Ngeria.
DeleteOne day the will deport her
ReplyDeleteShe has to say all that and distance herself , what did Shetima expect? Her conservative following expect her to do that and she knows that’s one way of getting their support. But we in Labour cannot be deceived
ReplyDelete👍🏾👍🏾
ReplyDeleteWhat do they expect? This one go deal with migrants from Africa with iron fist! Because she’ll go overboard to try to prove her British allegiance even more than the original owners of the land 🤣🤣🤣she has started already with her policies. It is well. 🙏🏽
ReplyDeleteDon’t worry we will kick her out very shortly just like a walk in the park.
DeleteLet us be sincere with ourselves. In this regard, she is not Nigeria's PR. That is not her job. Her job is leader of the UK opposition party. However, we are ALL Nigeria's PR so what example do we set (from the lowest to the highest ilk)?
ReplyDeleteLets all look inwards instead of pointing fingers, eh!
Before I get persecuted for this, my statement does not mean I am in support of other utterances. But truly, she is not being paid to do PR. Na so truth I speak o!!! 😊
Thats not part of her job description. 🤷♀️. Lets allow her do her job.
ReplyDeleteWell no one is stopping her from dealing with the task is meant to deal with! She decided to slow herself by criticising another country ; which is her country of heritage!
DeleteIt was part of Sunak's job as leader and Prime Minister to see what India and the UK could do together.
ReplyDeleteNigeria may not be as good as a nation should be, but there are lots of positive things coming out from there, and they should serve as springboard for collaboration.
Agreed. Sunak was PM so able to leverage that. Kemi is yet to get there. She needs to be singular in her approach. When she gets there (if she does), we can then see and react to what happens.
ReplyDeleteIt's not the PR issue that is irking Nigerians
ReplyDeleteIt's the misrepresentation.
For example she was a privileged girl she didn't need to tell lies to put her point across.
She should first takeout the logs in her eyes before seeing the speck in others.
Nigeria is dangerous what about London knife crimes..
She said she was carrying table and chairs to school
But she went to privileged schools and it does not happen.
The problem with many of us lies in the *Stockholm Syndrome*
Some say when she was business secretary she was not approached..
But Rishi had a business envoy in Angela I think that's her name. She has English White mother and Nigerian father.
She opened up her office to us.. in Parliament building.
She helped alot of us without making noise.
We once asked her if Nigerian MP meet at all
She said not at all that in fact they hardly greet each other even in the same party. It's a shame that's her conclusion.
Her job is not to represent Nigeria but the Uk goverments interests should she become PM. So in the case there is a dispute between Nigeria and UK she needs to show she will support UK and not Nigeria. Therefore she cannot be an ambassador. Her role is singular. We might have dual faces but hers must be seen and heard to be one... British, anti immigration et all that comes with it. Not an easy burden I must add. But for her political career, she's done well to ignore the criticisms. We spend hours lamenting and arguing whilst she is focussed on building her career. Perhaps we should take a leaf out of her book and concentrate on building our businesses, communities (because WE are allowed to wear several hats) and families.
ReplyDeleteShalom! 🙏🏿
Truth is always bitter. Welldone Kemi👏👏❤️🌹
DeleteLet the VP focus on his role and improve the country, and stop meddling in the politics of other countries. Kemi is performing her role well. If Nigeria improves, no one would put us down.
ReplyDeleteVP should focus on governing Nigeria. As far as i'm concerned he was just shifting attention by creating a sound bite. All these phantom distractions meant to engage the attention of Nigerians while the powers that be, plunder and loot. Kemi's commentaries are not the cause of Nigeria's problems. Someone who is fighting a lion does not have time for the fly that is perched on top of eba. VP should focus on Nigeria's problems and drop the sledgehammer and ignore the fly.
ReplyDeleteI can't blame her in any way possible. What do Nigerians want sef? Always wanting to associate with the glory which they later on destroy.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan, but I'm liking her already.
