The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has announced the appointment of Ademola Adeyemi-Bero as chairman of its board of governors for 2025. Adeyemi-Bero has also been named Nigeria’s OPEC governor for the coming year.

Heineken Lokpobiri, minister of state for petroleum resources (oil), confirmed the appointment at the 189th meeting of the OPEC conference. In a statement issued by his media aide, Nneamaka Okafor, Lokpobiri described the appointment as a testament to Nigeria’s active contributions to the global oil industry.

“The appointment provides Nigeria with a vital platform to advocate for balanced energy policies that benefit oil producers, consumers, and the global economy,” Lokpobiri said. He also commended Gabriel Aduda, the outgoing Nigerian OPEC governor, for his dedicated service. “Ambassador Aduda played an instrumental role in advancing Nigeria’s interests within OPEC and ensuring the country’s influential presence in global energy discussions,” he added.

OPEC also named Adeeb Al-Aama as Saudi Arabia’s OPEC governor and alternate chairman of the board of governors for 2025. Additionally, the conference extended the tenure of OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais for another three years, starting August 1, 2025.

“The OPEC conference brought together representatives from member countries to address significant issues, including reports from the secretary-general and the Economic Commission Board (ECB), and to deliberate on critical internal matters,” Okafor said.

During the meeting, OPEC extended Nigeria’s oil production quota of 1.5 million barrels per day (bpd) until 2026. The organization also reaffirmed the overall crude oil production levels for OPEC and non-OPEC participating countries as agreed in the 35th OPEC and non-OPEC Ministerial Meeting, with the extension effective through December 31, 2026.
